Occasionally, I like to use these pages to make mention of other groups, websites or organisations that are taking up the fight against problem gambling and irresponsible industry practices. One such group has recently sprung up on Facebook; I’m referring to the Gambling Action Group.

I was reading Peter Fitzsimons’ column in the SMH online this morning, and he made mention of a Facebook group called All Bets R Off. It’s for people who “think that the insidious nature of sports gambling getting into live sports broadcasts, sports shows and sports coverage generally has gone way too far.” A worthy cause indeed, and one I’ve ranted about here.

The good people at pokieact.org are putting together a petition to ensure our children are not exposed to pokies, and I for one think this is a good thing.

To quote from their site:

“…what about the pokie rooms that are wide open to all patrons. Kids having a meal are continually bombarded with the bright lights and obnoxious pokie music. KENO screens are affixed to the walls calling for more gambling. Children can’t go into the gaming area themselves… but they are ever so close they might as well be.”
